6 More miles of trail and counting…

67 degrees today…not bad for the second week of November. Unfortunately, It’s probably one of the last few remaining nice riding days for a while. I did my weekly ride at Cherry Plain State Park. But, before I left the house I brought the area up on Google Maps and used the satellite image feature to look for new trails. I always see old logging roads and abandoned roads that lead somewhere, I just don’t know where. That’s where the satellite images come in handy. Even if it’s not a “mapped” road, often times you can follow it when you zoom in on the satellite image. Today I rode an old abandoned road the turned into good climbing and rolling terrain. However, when I came to a bridge to cross, it kind of reminded me of the bridge in the Chevy Chase movie Funny Farm. Yeah, I had to get a good look before I crossed to make sure it was safe.
Adding this ~6 miles will easily give me a 20+ mile ride if I put it all together…and staying mostly on state land. If I ride from home to put it ALL together, I bet I could connect ~40 miles.

Wicked Creepy Cyclocross

The NYCROSS.com Wicked Creepy Cyclocross Race wasn’t really that creepy, but I did spot a skeleton racing, a camouflage ninja racing and a Scottish warrior racing. This race is always held on Halloween weekend, and this year it fell on the day. A great turnout of racers on a great day for ‘cross racing. The temperature was in the lower 60’s and at times it felt like the wind might have been in the lower 60’s as well…but no tropical storm today. The wind was causing a few minor disruptions to the course markings, but race officials and volunteers did a great job of keeping the course well marked. The only casualty was the E-Z Up tent, at the start/finish, that the scorers had planned on using. About three minutes before the start, it was tumbling across a soccer field with the wind.
Today’s race course was definitely a roadie course. From the paved start to the long straight flat sections to the packed down sand pit. Not much here for the technical skills of a mountain biker, but every ‘cross course that I’ve been on has been fun. For me, the fun is the cyclocross racing itself, regardless of the course design.
I rode well today. During the second lap I was struggling a bit, but I worked through it and was able to pick up the pace from there. More improvements at the barriers and more improvement with results too. I wasn’t sure how close I was to top ten. It felt like I wasn’t quite there, and I wasn’t. I did however finish in 13th place which was mid-pack. Overall, this is my best ‘cross finish…not my highest, but my best.
One more race to wind up the season, the final NYCROSS. com race…the Bethlehem Cup in two weeks.

2010 Wildcat Epic 100

Hot off the press…or email…The details of the inaugural Wildcat Epic 100 mountain bike stage race. The following is the email that was sent out from the guys at Genesis Adventures.

Hi All,

We’ve wrapped our 2009 season and have dug into our 2010 planning. We are pleased to announce the new details for the Wildcat Epic 100! We will launch this inaugural Wildcat Epic 100 based on your feedback from last year. We want to keep the event to two days on the weekend to prevent days off of work. Our goal of 100 miles over two days should be reachable for many riders. We’ve broken out accommodations so you can decide to stay at base camp in a tent or find a local hotel. We made the meal plan optional so that you can save additional money if you want to bring your own. We also moved to a 100% solo event to eliminate teammate issues.

As a result…we are going to race on August 7th & 8th, 2010 with New Paltz, NY serving as our base camp for the entire weekend. We’re going to design two 50-mile loops that will include single track, fire roads, and pavement. We’ll start and end each day in the same location, but on two different courses. The main location will include space for camping. We will have a mandatory kick-off meeting on Friday night so we can get started first thing Saturday morning. We will provide a catered meal option for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening. While the meals are optional, we hope that everyone sticks around and meets their fellow riders.

Early Entry fee will be $200 (we hope you find that agreeable).

Camping will be an additional $40, Dinners $20 each.

We are busy updating the website and will open registration next week.

Saratoga Spa CX

Saratoga Spa Cyclocross was the next race on the NYCROSS.com Series schedule. The promoters promised a challenging race course, and they delivered. After two days of heavy rain, the course couldn’t be anything cut challenging. This particular course for me was a good one. It allowed me to ride more like a mountain bike race than a road race. And, after several weeks of limited riding and training, I could feel that I was getting my legs back.
We had a pretty large field of riders with alot of familiar faces. With the mountain bike season now finished, many of the guys I raced mountain bikes with are now coming to the ‘cross races.
This course also incorporated a spiral or maze. Much larger than the Troy race. At on point I made a joke about getting dizzy, but I’m not sure how much of a joke it was. Even with the mud, soft ground and sand pit, this was still a pretty fast race. For me, I saw a huge improvement at the barriers which kept my momentum up during each lap. A flowing singletrack trail through the woods allowed me to make-up time on each lap. Even with a 25th place finish in a big field of riders, this was my best cyclocross race yet.
The next race is on Halloween…Wicked Creepy Cyclocross Race in Bennington, VT.

Uncle Sam Cyclocross Gran Prix

Day 2 for the NYCROSS.com cyclocross weekend in Troy was today. Today we ran the course in the opposite direction from yesterday, with a few slight changes in course design. I personally liked Saturday’s course better, but this was also a fun course to race. I think it was a bit more difficuclt, but still fun.
The weather cooperated to the point of no precipitation, but it was just about as cold as Saturday. But, it’s cyclocross…it’s not July anymore…I was prepared for snow.
I rode pretty well today. I finished -1 in 12th place. Again, I see an improvement in each race that I do. The barriers still slow me down, but that will get better over time. Practice…practice…practice…
My next ‘cross race is next week in Saratoga Spring, the next NYCROSS.com race.

NYCROSS.com Day 1 in Troy

The first day of my two days of ‘cross racing at Troy’s, Prospect Park is complete. Today was the NYS Cyclocross Championship, although my Cat 4 race was not a championship race. Not that I had a plan of winning, but I did have a plan of continuing to improve in my ‘cross racing. And improve I did.
Today’s race went off with a temperature of 35 degrees. This may have been the coldest race I’ve ever done. During my pre-ride, my fingers were so cold that I could barely squeeze the brake levers. After my pre-ride I had to warm up my fingers and put in my winter riding gloves.
This race course was the most technically challenging ‘cross course I’ve ridden yet. There were more transitions from dirt to pavement to dirt, more soft ground, steep run-ups and the “spiral of despair” as I heard someone call it. The spiral is a tight 360 degree spiral that then turns sharp 180 degrees and out of the spiral. I’m glad I didn’t have to do it in a crowd. I’m definitely getting better at the barriers, but my remount on the bike is still a little clumsy.
I had a 17th place finish and finished on the same lap as the winner. I see that as a huge improvement for me. Sunday’s course will be slightly different and I hope to again improve over this race too.

Winter Riding

I came across this article online a few years ago, and thought it was some good basic information for winter riding.

How to prepare yourself for winter riding

Cycling during the winter season can be considered quite a challenge. Shortened daylight hours and the possibility of rainy or icy conditions are just some of the main challenges that eager cyclists have to deal with. While there’s not much we can do to change the conditions of the winter weather, we can still get better prepared for them.

Anyone who’s ever gone cycling in winter can tell you that the right approach is all about being visible, remaining warm and keeping dry. While preparations to the bike will include wider tires, lights, reflectors and mudguards, these last ones will win you favor from club members should you train with others on group rides.

When it comes to winter clothing, you can choose from many different options. The most appropriate clothing for winter cycling is made of big thin layers, instead of one or two thick ones. Multiple layers help keeping the air inside, which acts as a natural insulator. If you start getting warmed up from the effort of pushing the pedals around, it’s easy to simply remove one layer at a time rather than have to shed a big one and risk getting a cold. As in any sports in the past few years, cycling clothing has become much more technical. There are many great choices when it comes to thermal / base layers, stretchy polyester and breathable over jackets. If your budget is rather limited and can’t afford expensive gear, then it’s least worth staying away from cotton, which can hardly keep you warm, instead steer towards synthetic or woolen materials.

Now, regarding the visibility point of view it’s worth mentioning that the upper body is the largest area bikers are likely to see. With this in mind, it’s wise to wear a jacket or jersey in fluorescent colors or something that has reflective strips. The same goes for the hats and gloves that you’re using. On this point, reflective strips on pedals or shoes are also very important, as it’s the very action of the peddling motion that will catch the biker’s eye.

Cycling in the rain can be a stifling experience if you don’t get properly equipped. Again, there are many options ranging from small low cost capes to top quality breathable jackets and leg-wear. If you plan to cycle on a regular basis, it’s well worth investing in more substantial gear. Some of the best options provide a combination of being waterproof but are also designed in bright and florescent colors. Finding something that properly covers both options has obvious tremendous benefits.

MTB Season Winding Down

It’s mid-October and I actually had to turn the heat on in the house. That means it’s getting cold outside. While that doesn’t really stop me from mountain biking, it certainly does slow me down. I did my usual day off from work ride at Cherry Plain State Park, but this time it was 43 degrees according to the car thermometer. With a base layer, long sleeve jersey and cool weather tights, I headed up the dirt road to the first trailhead. In a previous post I had said that fall is my favorite time of year for mountain biking because it is so quiet and there is no one else on the trails. Well, I think some others feel the same way. When I pulled up the the Park entrance, three horse trailers were blocking a side road/parking area. I didn’t come across the horses and riders, but while I was finishing up my last two miles, I did encounter a hunter. He wasn’t hunting, but he was sighting in his rifle. He wasn’t some back hills yahoo just shooting, he was actually a park employee in a very remote area shooting away from the trails. That is one indication that the mountain bike season is just about over in the northeast or, at least in my part of New York. With the hunting season coming, I normally take November completely off from mountain biking.
One more mountain bike race for the season, the NYS MTB Series Finally at Riedlebaur’s Resort in Round Top, NY, and then five or six more cyclocross races.
