Windham World Cup Mountain Bike festival 2011

(Ski Windham – Windham, NY) – As part of the UCI World Cup Mountain Bike race festivities at Windham, we are pleased to present the second year of the XC, “Race the World” event. “Race the World” will again be part of the New York State MTB series (check out NYSMTBseries.com for details) and this year, we’re happy to announce it will also be part of the Root 66 series.
All XC races will be on Sunday. Please see www.racewindham.com for a detailed schedule and more information about the UCI races and other weekend festivities.
The Windham World Cup and “Race the World” events are being organized by the community and are not-for-profit; any net revenue will support community trails for public use. Registration will entitle you to participate in all World Cup festivities at Windham Mountain including a Friday night Block Party with a 100m time-trial sprint (“Drag Race”) in front of the pub; live music on Saturday night (bands TBA); and a “Big Wheel” race down a steep, paved course (BYOBW). To encourage attendance, and unlike most international World Cup venues, there will be no fees charged to enter the venue or the consumer and tech expos. To help defray the tremendous organizing costs and to keep the World Cup in the US, a minimal fee for parking – $10 for an entire carload for one day, or $25 for three days – will be charged. Prize pay out is subject to registration enrollment.

Wilmington/Whiteface – Leadville Qualifier

The Wilmington/Whiteface 100 – Leadville Qualifier race started out as a pretty good weekend for me. I arrived in Lake Placid early afternoon on Saturday and checked in to the Econo-Lodge. Then I went for a nice and easy ride around town. As many times as I have been to Lake Placid, I always enjoy the “Olympic Village”. It never gets old for me. Then, dinner and off to bed early, to get up early on Sunday. The race had a 6:30 am start time. I arrived at Whiteface Mountain about 5:15 and with coffee in hand, started to get ready for the race. Staging was at 6:15, the National Anthem at 6:25 and a shotgun start at 6:30.
The course ended up being 90 km, with three very serious climbs. Unfortunately, I only made it to 18 km, never making to the big climbs. At some point during a descent, the freehub stopped engaging. This, of course, won’t allow you to peddle. You just spin like mad and you stay still. Without the proper tools to take the hub apart at trail side, I was a DNF.
I was fortunate to get a ride from a spectator back to Whiteface. I wasn’t looking forward to walking.
When I got home, I took the hub apart and found that the spring which controls the pawls had broke into three pieces. So, even if I could have taken the hub apart along the trail, the was no fix.
My next race isn’t for another two weeks, so I expect to have parts and the hub repaired by then. For now, a spare wheel will be used and I’ll be back out on the trail this week.

Stewart Super Six Pack

Stewart Super Six Pack

The inaugural Stewart Super Six Pack 6 hour mountain bike race was held on Sunday May 22. The race was promoted by MTBNJ.com and was held at the Stewart State Forest near Newburgh, NY. This was a pretty good race for the first race put on my MTBNJ.com. The course was a ~10 mile lap on the same great, flowing singletrack that we all love. It was a tough race…lots of mud, steep power climbs and drop-offs. By the forth hour, my upper body was tired and sore. But, it was still a good course and fun to ride. I hung in there and continued.
I raced in the Masters 45+ field and I faired much better than expected. There were 26 riders pre-registered for my category and 22 starters. I had two goals going into the race – finish, and finish top 20. I did both, and much to my surprise I finished 13th in category.

Wilmington-Whiteface 100k — June 19, 2011

WILMINGTON, N.Y. (LakePlacid.com) – The Town of Wilmington is pleased to announce that the region will host the Wilmington/Whiteface 100k on June 19, 2011. Wilmington will serve as one of three qualifier series race host venues for the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race, the best known and most prestigious mountain bike race in North America.

“The Town of Wilmington is very excited to be hosting the Wilmington/Whiteface 100k,” said Randy Preston, Town of Wilmington Supervisor. “As a national caliber event, it will bring the best of the best from the competitive mountain bike set to the Northeast. We are anxious to show the world what mountain biking in the Adirondacks is all about.”

The event’s schedule coincides with the annual Wilmington Bike Fest, which includes the Whiteface Uphill Bike Race, which will be held on Saturday, June 18. Wilmington/Whiteface 100k participants are invited to “Warm UP” by riding in the mountain bike division that is being introduced this year; a five mile race to the top of the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway.
“The event is a perfect fit for the destination, as it supports the Whiteface Region’s brand as a biking destination, and will increase visitor activity during the typically slower shoulder season,” said James McKenna, President of the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism/Lake Placid CVB. “This is another event that resulted from the cooperative partnerships that were cemented in order to successfully host the Empire State Winter Games. Kudos to the staff at the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) who facilitated the connection with the event organizers that ultimately brought this event to Wilmington.”
“Wilmington and Whiteface Mountain comprise a mecca for outdoor recreation, from skiing and riding to world class fly fishing and cycling,” said Ted Blazer, ORDA President/CEO. “This event will definitely challenge the competitors, and serve to highlight some of the greatest mountain bike terrain in the Adirondacks.”
Showcasing some of the best places to ride in America, the Leadville Qualifying Series races will be held in America’s great mountains with races in the Adirondacks, Sierra Nevadas and the Rockies. The other two qualifiers will be held in North Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains on July 10 and Crested Butte, Colorado on July 31. Each qualifying race will provide 100 qualifying spots to the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race. The spots will be allocated partially on the basis of age-group performance and partly by lottery among finishers.
“We are delighted to be able to have three great races in three of the best mountain biking locations in the country,” said Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports. “Besides the opportunity to qualify for the Leadville Trail 100, these races will be superb opportunities to celebrate the sport of mountain biking.”
The Adirondack qualifier will traverse 100 kilometers of backcountry trails in the Towns of Wilmington and Jay and finish on Whiteface Mountain.

Kenda Tires and Tubes

As I have for many years now, I will be riding on Kenda Tires on all my bikes. Again, for 2011, I have the support of Jim Wannamaker and Kenda Tires. I’ve been on Kenda tires for the majority of the years that I have been racing. I’ve also have had the support of Kenda for about 5 years now. Even without the support of Kenda, I would be riding the tires. They have a superior product, are very innovative and have great tread designs for our northeast riding. I will continue to use the Kenda Nevegal and Karma 29er tires on my mountain bikes, but I am also looking forward to the new Slant Six 29er and ‘cross tire. I know there are a lot of great road tires out there, but the Kenda Konstrictor is a great solid tire and has never failed me.
My thanks goes out to Jim, and I am looking forward to giving my support back to this great company.

The Perfect Pedal Stroke

How to get the most energy from each crank revolution.

(Bicycling.com) – Pedaling in a simple circle is a complex thing, but mastering it can save energy, says Todd Carver, biomechanist at Colorado’s Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. He says that with proper ankling (shown here; not the injury-causing technique of the past), riders can churn out the same amount of power at a heart rate as many as five beats per minute lower. This stroke is for flat terrain at threshold, or time trial, intensity.

Hip-Knee-Ankle Alignment Viewed from the front, your hip, knee and ankle should line up throughout the pedal stroke. “You don’t want knee wobble,” says Carver. “Just think pistons, straight up and down.” If you can’t correct this, or if you experience knee pain when you try to restrict lateral movement, you may need orthotics or another type of biomechanical adjustment…Complete article can be found here
