Lactic Acid Myths & Cycling Training Tips | Bicycling Magazine

FACT: It’s a source of energy.

Lactic acid, or lactate, is a chemical that your body produces 24/7, even while you’re doing nothing, says L. Bruce Gladden, PhD, professor of kinesiology at Auburn University. Its purpose? To feed your muscles so you can move.

FICTION: You can blame it for the burn.

Lactic acid is not what makes your legs threaten mutiny when you’re climbing or going hard…

Victor Apple Farm Mountain Bike Stage Race

One of this coming season’s races that I am really looking forward to is Victor Apple Farm’s Mountain Bike Stage Race being held on the weekend of June 21-23.  There is three days of weekend racing planned and it looks to be a fun event.

The Stage Race will consist of three stages-  A mountain bike time trial, a short track cross country race and finally a traditional cross country race. Each course is said to have fast rolling terrain along with some great singletrack on the cross country course.

When I saw the listing on BikeReg for this race, I immediately emailed the promoter for more details. I’m starting to be drawn more towards the ultra-endurance/marathon and multi-day mountain bike stage race events, and this race is just what I’m looking for.

Capital District Wildlife Management Area

Cherry Plain Trails

Capital District Wildlife Management Area Trails

Capital District Wildlife Management Area  – This is where much of my mountain biking takes place. In addition to the marked trails, there is also miles and miles of double-track, power line trails and dirt road. And, if I want to ride from home, I can easily get a 30+ mile mountain bike ride.

The 4153 acre Capital District Wildlife Management Area (WMA) was acquired from 1928 to 1941 for use as a game management area and game refuge. Prior to acquisition, the main human activities on the area had been subsistence farming and charcoal burning. During the 1930’s and 40’s a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp was operated at the WMA and many projects, including the dam for the Black River Pond and the roads on the management area were completed. The WMA was used as a stocking site during the beaver reintroduction program of the 1930’s, and in 1944 the refuge designation was dropped, and the entire area became a wildlife management area.

Capital District Wildlife Management Area

Capital District Wildlife Management Area – (click map to enlarge)

Located in the Towns of Stephentown and Berlin in Rensselaer County, there are seven miles of public truck trails with several small parking areas and numerous pull offs throughout the road network. Additional public access to the interior of the WMA is provided by nine miles of multiple use trails for hiking, skiing, mountain biking and horseback riding. Cherry Plain State Park, nestled within the WMA, is managed by the Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservations.

Habitat/Ecological Communities

The Capital District WMA is situated at the southern end of a geologic feature known as the Rensselaer Plateau and is covered with semi-mature to mature stands of black cherry, sugar maple, yellow birch, hemlock, red oak, and red spruce. Black spruce, tamarack and balsam fir occur in the characteristic bog-like wetlands on the area. The topography is quite flat except on the eastern edge which drops into the Kinderhook Creek valley.

Wildlife

Wildlife on the area are typical of forests and forest edge habitats including white-tailed deer, snowshoe hare, beaver, otter, fisher, bobcat, raccoon, ruffed grouse, wild turkey, woodcock, a variety of songbirds, woodland raptors, reptiles and amphibians. Recently, moose have entered Rensselaer County from neighboring states and moose now reside on the WMA. Moose sign, such as young striped maple stripped of bark, tracks, and piles of scat is very common throughout the WMA and moose are regularly seen.

Recreation

The Capital District WMA provides opportunities for many types of outdoor recreation including hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife observation, x country skiing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Hunting, trapping and fishing are governed by statewide rules and regulations. Thirteen miles of town roads and state truck trails provide access to the area and a network of foot trails continues to be developed. CDWMA is managed for non-intensive recreation consistent with its wildlife management function. Those seeking more intensive day use areas should visit the nearby Cherry Plain and Grafton Lakes State Parks.

Management

Habitat management is accomplished primarily through commercial timber harvests that are used to increase habitat diversity by creating various kinds of forest canopy openings. Recent timber harvests have been aimed at improving snowshoe hare habitat. Other planned timber harvests will be used to create a patchwork of different stages of early successional habitat that will benefit a variety of species.
Other routine management actions included mowing to maintain grassy openings and apple tree maintenance.

Rules and Regulations

Public use of Capital District WMA is governed by Environmental Conservation Law 11-2101 and 6NYCRR 51

Hunting, trapping, and fishing are allowed, except as specifically prohibited by posted notice.

The following are prohibited:
• Camping
• Swimming
• Use of motorized boats
• Overnight storage of boats
• Off road vehicle use
• Snowmobile use except as specifically permitted by signs
• Cutting, removing or damaging living vegetation without the written permission of the Regional Wildlife Manager

USA Cycling Unveils 2013 US Pro XCT Calendar

National cross country mountain bike series grows to nine rounds

Elite cross country mountain bikers will have more opportunities to race in the US national mountain bike series in 2013. USA Cycling unveiled a schedule featuring nine rounds in seven states for its 2013 US Pro XCT. Six of the rounds will be UCI categorized races while the remaining three will not be.

The bigger series covers more ground geographically than in recent years by adding stops in the northeast and the southeast, and it expands beyond UCI categorized races to include some non-UCI categorized rounds.  The Catamount Classic XC in Vermont is the only completely new race venue for the national series; all the other events have previously been part of the national series at some point.

The details

The national series will kick off in Dripping Springs, Texas with the first stop of the US Pro XCT at the Mellow Johnny’s Classic, a UCI category 1 event, on March 2.

Next up will be a pair of US Cup Triple Crown races in California. After a successful first appearance on the US Pro XCT in 2011, Bonelli Park will be a UCI category 2 event on March 16-17. Fontana will follow two weeks later with its fifth time in the US Pro XCT, on March 30-31.

The series will continue with a third California round at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey on April 18-21.

One month later, the calendar will shift to the southeastern United States to contest the Bump ‘N Grind in Birmingham, Alabama on June 2.

The calendar will conclude with four UCI-inscripted events. On June 22, Missoula will host the Missoula XC in Montana. The following week, the action will happen in the northeast when former World Cup venue Windham, New York, hosts the Windham XC on June 29.

The penultimate event on the US Pro XCT will be the ever-popular Subaru Cup, part of the well-established Wisconsin Off-Road Series (WORS), on July 13 in Mt. Morris, Wisconsin. The race will again operate at the UCI C1 level.

The new series finale, the Catamount Classic XC in Catamount, Vermont on August 3, will happen as a UCI level 2 category event. Catamount has previously hosted UCI categorized cyclo-cross races.

Top elite male and female riders will be ranking in overall US Pro XCT standings. Teams which are registered as a UCI Trade Team or as a USA Cycling Mountain Bike Domestic Pro Team are eligible for the team standings.

Defending US Pro XCT champions Todd Wells (Specialized Racing) and Monique “Pua” Mata (Sho-air-Specialized) will ride in defense of their overall Pro XCT wins from the 2012 season.

The US Pro XCT will also likely influence nominations to the American team for the 2013 UCI.Mountain Bike World Championships.

For more information about the Pro XCT, visit www.usacycling.org/proxct.
