Windham Signs 3 Year Deal With UCI

The 2010 World Cup Mountain Bike Finals being held at Ski Windham in Windham, NY, will be the first of many World Cup event to come. Here is the post from the Windham World Cup Facebook page:
“The Windham World Cup Group has signed a contract with UCI to host a World Cup over the next three years, ending the drought of world-class mountain biking in the U.S.”
I’m sure there will be more details very soon.

Blackfly Challenge

The start of this year’s Blackfly Challenge was in Inlet, NY with the finish 40 miles away in Indian Lake, NY. The point to point race alternates each year between Inlet and Indian Lake. This is an event that has been going on for the last 15 year and is already scheduled for 2011.
This is the first year that I have done this race. Anyone that I know that has raced it says it is a must do race. Yeah, they were right. This was an excellent race. 40 miles through the Moose River Plains of the Adirondack Mountains, 1600 vertical feet of elevation and about 330 racers. Racers of all types…from pro right down to the bike path rider. Race categories include cyclocross, expert, sport and beginner with various age groups within each class.
With the Blackfly not being a USAC sanctioned race, I decided to register and race Expert Masters class. No, I never expected to be in contention to podium, but with the race not associated with USAC, I did expect a lot of sandbaggers. So, I set two goals for myself: finish and finish under three hours. Well, I finished with a time of 3:04:22. I’ll take that as meeting my goals. Especially after the morning I had getting there. On the way, we got lost. Our directions were a bit confusing and we mistook Route 9 N as Route 9N instead of 9 North. We ended up driving about an hour out of our way and arrived15 minutes prior to the start. I ran to check-in, ran back to the car to change and ran to the restroom to make it to the start line a few minutes before the start. With a Camelbak full of orange Motor Tabs, I made it!
With no warm-up at all, the first few miles were way to fast, but I did get into a rhythm and worked my way through the fist 20 miles, a rolling steady climb of 1600 verticle. 20 miles down, 20 miles to go. The second 20 miles was a rolling 1600 vertical descent…going down the other side of the mountain, but that was the most climbing I think I have ever done on a descent. I don’t use a GPS, so I have no idea how much total climbing there really was, but it was a lot.
I’m happy with my race. I finished 7th (expert 40+) and 181/328 overall.

Schenectady 6hr MTB Race

The 4th Annual Schenectady 6hr Mountain Bike Race was held this past Sunday at the Schenectady Central Park Nature Trails. The race course is ~5.6 miles of mostly single-track trails.
This year I raced as a duo team with my friend Phill. The day started with rain. When I got to the race, it was still rain until about an hour before start time. We set up the EZ-Up canopyin out pit area and decided that Phill would take the start. It turned out to be a great decision…5 minutes after the start, my rear tire went flat. After the removal of a thorn and a quick tube change, I was ready and waiting for my turn. Riding as a duo, I knew that I could ride all out for a 45-50 minute lap. I guess I did go all out, I came in with a 41 minute lap time. I never expected that and didn’t expect to repeat that time either. We alternated every other lap and after lap 5, four hours into the race, Phill was whooped. That was also when the rain started again. Actually, it was a downpour. That next lap was an interesting ride. 20 minutes later, when the sun came out, it finally stayed out for the rest of the day. I finished for us riding the last three laps. I did have to pace myself a bit, but I managed the last three laps in ~2:15:30 and averaged ~0:44:15 per lap for my 5 laps. We finished in 5th place with 8 laps in a time of 6:23:00. Overall I’m very pleased with my riding for the day. This race was a good test for my fitness heading into the summer.
A huge thanks goes out to both Motor Tabs and Fluid Recovery Drink for keeping me going all day.

Illegal Mountain Bike Trails

(From Singletracks.com – June 2, 2010) The phrase “illegal mountain bike trail” conjures up different emotions depending on who you talk to. To some it’s an adrenaline-filled dare; to others it’s forbidden fruit not to be touched; to still others, it’s a guilty pleasure. To non-mountain-bikers, it’s a rule they expect to be strictly enforced. But what are illegal mountain bike trails really?

Land managers tend to refer to these types of trails in a number of ways, though rarely as illegal per se; instead they call them: unauthorized, user-generated, social trails, or non-system trails. User-generated trails have existed since well before the days of mountain bikes and hikers are just as guilty (if not more so) for creating many of the social trails that exist today in local, state, and federal parks.

Recreational ecologists and others who study trail systems have come to the conclusion that if official trails don’t take users where they want to go, unofficial trails will pop up to fill the void. This means, for example, that if a trail takes the scenic route to the banks of the river, hikers and bikers will find a more direct route to get there. And if there’s a sweet boulder in the middle of the forest, mountain bikers will beat a path to shred it.

To give you an idea of the scale of the problem, in California alone, officials estimate there are more than 13,000 miles of non-system trails located on state and federal lands. Many of these trails are unsustainable from an environmental perspective and can be dangerous as well. The downside is that government agencies end up diverting funds from official trail building and maintenance projects to close and remediate the unofficial trails that spring up. Some agencies have had success charging illegal trail builders with the huge costs of clean up – but that’s only if they’re able to catch the culprits in the act.

In certain instances, social trails can become official trails which tends to send a mixed message to unauthorized trail builders. This can happen due to the ongoing failure of signage and trail closures or an eventual recognition that users prefer the unofficial routes over the official ones. Of course this is pretty rare and can take years – and in the meantime the risk of fines and other punishment is high.

Mountain biking was born out of a non-conformist culture so there’s always an undercurrent of flouting the rules in search of the best dirt. At the IMBA World Summit we heard about one community where bumper stickers were printed that said “Don’t be the Ranger’s Bitch – Ride Illegal Trails!” Clearly this doesn’t help open new trails to bikes any more than constructing unofficial trails does.

One more definition of an illegal mountain bike trail is any trail (official or otherwise) that is closed to bikes but open to other users (hikers, equestrians, etc.). IMBA’s conservative stance is that unless bikes are expressly allowed on a trail it should be considered closed to bikes (harsh). The fines and penalties for riding these trails can be just as nasty as if they were unofficial trails – just ask the Riding the Spine crewabout mountain biking in the Grand Canyon. Suffice it to say if you’re not interested in being taken into custody by federal agents you may want to stick to the legal trails.

Illegal mountain bike trails will never completely disappear and it’s up to each individual to make responsible riding decisions for the greater good. Know that if you commit the crime you gotta be prepared to do the time and be accountable to all the other mountain bikers who are affected by your actions.

The bulk of my racing is starting

With just four races throughout the spring (March/April/May), my race season is now really getting underway. Three mountain bike marathons, a 6 hour, a 12 hour, a 6 hour trail run, Mt Snow, and the World Cup weekend at Windham will keep the summer busy. There might be one or two other mountain or road races thrown in there before cyclocross starts in September, but the long endurance racing is what I’m looking forward to.
There are races that I haven’t done in the past, one in particular is the “6 hr Crazy Magic Ultra Trail Run“. I’m not really a runner, at least not since college, but this race intrigues me. It is on the same trail system as the Schenectady 6 hr MTB Race and I know it will be a fun day…and I have 2 1/2 months to prepare. Other first time races for me will be the 15th Annual Black Fly Challenge 40 mile mountain bike race, 12 Hours at 909 and the 4th Annual Race with the Wind 50 mile mountain bike race.
Now, I guess, it’s back to training.

Tymor Park Challenge

Lagrangeville, NY – The Highland to Hudson (H2H) MTB Race Series Tymor Park Challenge race was held this past Sunday. The race is put on by Eastern Sports Promotions, and as all other races that Tim promotes, this was a well organized race and a very challenging race course. A 6 mile loop with the first 3+ miles of superb single-track. Fast, technical, rolling terrain single-track with a couple of moderate climbs and fast single-track descents. After that, it was uphill from there…literally. After crossing a field, the next 1+ mile was climbing. And for me, a monster climb. With the conditions dry, it was definitely rideable, but for me, granny gear rideable. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one. The top of the climb brought us to more single-track. This time with a lot of exposed rocks and roots and more great single-track descents. Cat 2 rode two laps.
This was an awesome race course. After racing here last year in the mud, I swore that I wouldn’t go back. But I did, and I glad I did. Racing Cat 2 is very challenging for me, but the best way to get better is to race with better riders. My 17th place finish might be a bit discouraging, but I rode well and my finishing time of 1:43:30 was right in line with my goal of ~1:45:00.

Balance Rock Ride

I headed across the boarder to Massachusetts today with some friends to ride in the Balance Rock State Park. Balance Rock is located in the northeast corner of the Pittsfield State Forest. With trail map in hand, the 6 of us rode up the road to the first trail head. Turned onto the singletrack and didn’t ride another dirt road until we reached the top of the mountain. Fast flowing singletrack through pine forest with rocks and roots as you would expect in the Northeast. And lots and lots of climbing…singletrack climbing. Some of it rolling terrain and some of it fairly steep as we switchbacked up the mountain. At the top, we took a little breather, rode at the top for a bit, and then headed back down the same singletrack trail that we went up. What a reward we got for all the climbing that we did…a fast technical descent. That is definitely the strongest part of my riding.
Once we reached the bottom, there was more singletrack riding in the pine forest before we headed back to the cars for some post ride beverages…Saranac, Otter Creek, Sam Adams…I’m already looking forward to the next trip to Balance Rock.
