2013 Cyclocross World Coming to USA -Louisville Gets the Nod

Road Trip! For the first time ever, the Cyclocross World Championships will be held in the United States in 2013 thanks to the efforts of U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross!
To be held in Louisville, KY, the USGPoC will get a trial run in 2012 as they host the masters ‘cross worlds, then a final shakedown for the masters event again in 2013 a few days before the worlds!
“After more than a decade of working closely with American promoters and the UCI to grow our international calendar of cyclo-cross events, Louisville’s winning bid is a testament to the success of those efforts and to the extraordinary quality of ‘cross racing in the U.S.,” USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson said.
US Gran Prix of Cyclo-cross (USGP) promoters, Bruce Fina and Joan Hanscom, will produce the races in partnership with the Louisville Sports Commission and USA Cycling.
“This is thrilling news,” said Fina. “We have worked for six years with the USA Cycling National Team and six years on the USGP to further develop the sport in the U.S. to the point where our riders can be competitive on the global stage. Hosting the Worlds in the U.S. is the next logical step. We hope to see a continued increase in the number of professional cross racers in the states and hope this venue will enhance that goal.”
Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com rider Jeremy Powers agrees, stating “The world champs are an event that everyone will compete in. Bart Wellens can’t say,’Oh, I’m not going to go.’ It’s going to pave the way for a lot of younger riders and going to give our country the depth and respect it deserves in ’cross. It’s also going to aid in the development of young riders and inspire them to want to race ’cross seriously and overall create something really special that I’m excited to be able to be part of. I’m looking forward to this with a lot of excitement.”
Louisville has hosted a stop on the USGP since 2007, as well as multiple USA Cycling Masters National Road Championships demonstrating a vibrant cycling community and tremendous local support of the championships.
“I was impressed with the vision and detail of the plans to develop the area into a cyclo-cross race venue,” said UCI technical delegate Simon Burney. “The area, terrain and surroundings lend themselves perfectly to a major race venue, and with the city of Louisville firmly behind the project the opportunity for world class events certainly looks exciting.”
Under the leadership of Mayor Jerry Abramson, Louisville is building America’s first permanent, major-city cyclocross facility at Eva Bandman Park, near downtown. Working with local cyclo-cross enthusiasts, Louisville Metro Government is developing a venue that can support local races and youth riding programs, while also hosting national and international races. The course at Eva Bandman also will serve as the home to the USGP and as a year round cycling park.
“I’m so proud that Louisville is the first city outside Europe to be awarded the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships,” said Mayor Jerry Abramson. “We’re turning Louisville into one of our nation’s most bike-friendly cities by investing in bicycle infrastructure, listening to the needs of local cyclists, and hosting events that draw more attention to cycling. Our local cyclo-cross teams are among the nation’s best, and we’re developing a venue that will help them keep their competitive edge.”
Until then, the World Cyclocross Championships will be held in Sankt Wendel, Germany in 2011 and in Koksijde, Belgium in 2012,

2010 MTB Season, Lots of Racing To Choose From

It’s mid-January, but the 2010 mountain bike season is approaching fast. Here is a rundown of some of the area races.
First off, one of the premier race series in the East is the Root 66 Race Series. Root 66 consists of 14 cross country races throughout New England. They will also hold a Kenda Cup qualifier held at the Millstone Grind in Websterville, VT. Root 66 will also be the race directors for the Mt Snow Mountain Bike Festival being held July 24-25.
The other New England series is the New England Championship Series sanction by the Eastern Fat Tire Association (EFTA). These races are not affiliated with USA Cycling. EFTA races are a little farther east, primarily in MA, NH, RI and ME.
In New York, we have excellent races on tap. Windham Mountain will be home for the UCI World Cup final race. The World Cup race is being held on August 28-29, the week before the World Cup Championship at Mt Ste Anne, Quebec.
The guys at Darkhorse Cycles in Montgomery, NY have some big plan too for 2010. They have three races scheduled at the Stewart State Forest in New Windsor, NY. First, on April 25, the 2nd Annual Singlespeed-A-Palooza. Last year 250 riders pre-registered, twice as many as expected. Next, with a tentative date of June 20, is the Stewart Sixer 6 hour race. This is a new race for Darkhorse. And finally, the Darkhorse 40 held on August 1. Stewart State Forest is home for some of the finest singletrack in the Catskill Region.
Also in the Catskill Region of New York is the New York State Mountain Bike Series. The 2010 series schedule has not been announce, but I’m sure you cam plan on some great venues like Williams Lake, Walnut Mountain, Riedlbauer’s Resort and Woodstock. Check back to their website for race information.
A new race for the northeast, also being held in the Catskill Region, is the Wildcat Epic 100 stage race. Promoted by Genesis Adventures, the wildcat Epic 100 makes its debut in 2010. This event is a 2 stage, 100 mile mountain bike race. The base camp will be in New Paltz, NY with two 50 mile courses starting and finishing there. The courses will mix fire roads, singletrack, and pavement to create a riding experience unlike any other on the East Coast.
Locally in the Capital District, Heather Rizzi continues to promote several fun events. Mountain bike races are held throughout the year, on or around Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She also holds a 6 hr race scheduled for June 6. While there are alot of races around to choose from, this 6 hr race is by far the best race deal you will ever find…ten bucks. That’s right, all that racing for only $10.00. You want to race as a team? $10.00 per rider. How can you pass it up. And finally, Heather’s Hot August Nights Race Series held every Tuesday evening in August. These events are held at Schenectady’s Central Park trails. This trail system is approximately 5 miles of fast rolling 99% singletrack trail.
I don’t want to forget about you downhill crazies. Plattekill Mountain will again hold their Downhill Race Series for downhill and dual slalom. The tentative date can be found here.

Training, Snow and Cancelled Race

It has been a pretty cold past few weeks. Too cold to really ride outside. And, when I have gone out for a ride, it wasn’t really too beneficial for training purposes. My outside rides have been more for the fun of the sport. I really enjoy mountain biking in the snow. It certainly keeps my technical skills sharp. We are getting a bit of a warm stretch for a few days (upper 30’s), so mountain bike rides are definitely in the weekend forecast. It will be good to get on the bike and actually be able to feel my face. It will also be good to ride the single-speed this weekend. I really should ride that more. Wow, that will be so much more fun than the trainer.
My first race of 2010 will have to wait until March. The Schenectady Winterfest has been cancelled, and therefore, the Winterfest Ice Race has been cancelled too. Proceeds of the race were to go to the Boy and Girls Club of Schenectady, so do I hope there is some other sort of fundraiser.
So, I keep riding the trainer and bike outside when I can. That March race will be here before you know it.

2010 CYCLING SCHEDULE FOR VERSUS TV

As reported by BikeRumor.com:
Versus TV has released their 2010 schedule for cycling coverage. The list is all ASO events, which means we’ll have to look elsewhere (NBC Universal Sports?) to watch the Giro d’Italia. Despite that, there’s a solid year of coverage to keep us entertained and the DVR full.
Televised coverage includes the Tour Down Under, Tour of Qatar, Tour of Oman, Paris-Nice, Criterium International, Paris Roubaix, Fleche Wallone, Liege Bastogne Liege, Tour de Romandie, Tour of California, Dauphine Libere, Tour of Philadelphia, Tour de Suisse, Tour de France and Paris Tours.
Mozy on past the break for the times and dates along with Versus’ description of most events…

Tour Down Under

January 17, 6-6:30p ET Cancer Council Criterium
January 19-23, 6-6:30p ET
January 24, 6-7p ET
February 7, 6-6:30p ET Highlights Show
The first stop on the world cycling calendar, the Santos Tour Down Under kicks off the cycling year in exhilarating style. The week-long event brings the top ProTour professional cycling teams to race on the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia each January. Up for grabs are important UCI ProTour points and the Santos Tour Down Unders Ochre Leaders Jersey.

Tour of Qatar: February 21, 3-4p ET

Qatar is big business in the cycling world, despite the not exactly bicycle friendly conditions and regularly attracts the biggest names from the sport, and the country is seriously being mooted for a Tour de France start.

Tour of Oman: February 28, 3-4p ET

The city of Muscat in the Sultana of Oman, Eddy Merckx and Dirk De Pau have found an agreement in order to organise a new road cycling event, from the 14th to the 19th of February 2010 for which the technical organisation will be entrusted to Amaury Sport Organisation, organisers of the Tour de France.

Paris-Nice: March 7 & 14, 5-7p ET

Paris-Nice, “the race to the sun”, is a professional cycling stage race starting March 7th. This year the start will take place in Montfort l’Amaury

Criterium International: March 28, 5-6p ET

Race organiser Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) has announced that the 2010 Criterium International – the two-day “mini Tour de France” – will take place on the island of Corsica in 2010. The race has been held in Charleville-Mézières, in the French Ardennes, since 2001. German Jens Voigt (Saxo Bank) has won the last three editions of the race.

Paris Roubaix: April 11, Time TBD

Paris-Roubaix is one of the oldest cycle races of the professional road cycling calendar. First run in 1896, there are 28 cobbles sections included in the race, three of them considered to be of maximum difficulty.

Fleche Wallone: April 25, 4:30-5p ET

The Flèche Wallonne is an international cycling race of one day, a classic, which takes place in Belgium during the spring. This race is part of the Pro-Tour program

Liege Bastogne Liege: April 25, 5-6p ET

Liege-Bastogne-Liege is the last major spring classic. First held in 1882, Liege Bastogne Liege is known as the ‘La Doyenne” because it is the oldest classic on the cycling calendar. It is one of the most prestigious and exacting events of the season. The out and back race through the Belgian Ardennes countryside is one of the most difficult races because it tests every rider’s endurance and ability to race over a series of high gradient hills. Legendary climbs such as the Cote de Wanne, Saint Roche, Stockeu and la Redoute force the riders to dig deep.

Tour de Romandie: May 2, 5-7p ET

The Tour de Romandie is a stage race which is part of the UCI ProTour. It runs in the old Romandie region, in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. It began in 1947, to coincide with the 50-year celebration of the Swiss Cycling.

Tour of California: May 16-23, Times TBD

The largest cycling event in America, the 2010 Amgen Tour of California is a Tour de France-style cycling road race, presented by AEG, that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding course from May 16-23.

Dauphine Libere: June 6, 4-6p ET & June 13, 3-5p ET

The week-long competition will start in eastern France and finish in Sallanches. A stage finish in Grenoble is planned for Friday, June 11, with a mountaintop finish taking place on L’Alpe the next day

Tour of Philadelphia: June 6, 1:30-3p ET

Philadelphia International Championship is the annual bicycle race held in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is described as “America’s top international cycling classic, and one of the richest and most prestigious one day races outside of Europe.”

Tour de Suisse: June 6 & 13, Times TBD

Tour de France: July 3-25, LIVE AM Broadcasts. TimesTBD

Paris Tours: October 10, 5-6pm ET

Vetta Sponsorship Through 2010

I have sign on with Vetta for another year, through 2010, to use their cycle computers and heart rate monitor.
Vetta is a leading brand in cycling computers and other cycling accessories. Vetta has been in the forefront of the cycling community for over 20 years. The brand name comes from the Italian word for “peak”, which perfectly describes what Vetta is all about. Vetta is originally known for its cycling computers, saddles, and helmets. After a change in management back in 2002, Vetta is now a prominent brand in cycling computers as well as lights and multi-tools. Back in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, Vetta was a proud sponsor of the U.S. Postal Service Pro Team. Vetta is currently sponsoring multiple teams including the LUNA Chix.

Beer Season Coming To An End

Wow, it’s 2010 already. It almost seems like the bicycle racing season is just too short. But, for me at least, it actually runs late March through November. That’s nearly nine months of racing and heavy riding. What happens during the other three months of the year? Well, it’s the off season…or as some might call it, beer season. Not to say that there isn’t ice cold Pale Ale at the trails and at the races from March through November, there is just a little more during the other three months.
My first cross country race isn’t scheduled until late March, but as I look at the calendar, that is less than 12 weeks away. Trying to train in the northeast during the winter does turn that 12 weeks into much less for quality training. Sure there are the miles on the trainer, but it isn’t the same as getting out on the road bike for 2 to 3 hours in the mountains. Or going to your favorite trails for an afternoon of hammering on the singletrack.
So, as we work our way through January, the transition from returnable bottles on the kitchen counter to water bottles and MotorTabs begins. Ride the trainer, ride the cold road or ride whatever trails that are ridable…the first race of the season will be here before you know it.
