US Proposes Law to Force Cyclists Off the Road

The Senate’s transportation authorization has drafted the S. 1813 Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act that if passed, would force cyclists to paths and trails parallel to all roads in national parks and other federal lands. Yes – new law that forces cyclists off the road.

Are you kidding me?!

The Section § 203 (d) (p. 226) says,

“(d) BICYCLE SAFETY.—The Secretary of the appropriate Federal land management agency shall prohibit the use of bicycles on each federally owned road that has a speed limit of 30 miles per hour or greater and an adjacent paved path for use by bicycles within 100 yards of the road.”

Andy Clarke, the President of the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) says,

“The problem with the provision is that the restriction applies regardless of the quality, safety, and utility of the path provided; it disregards cyclists need the roadway to reach shops, services etc.; and ignores our fundamental right to the road.”

Answering why this proposed provision, Clarke says,

“One such idea is that it’s just not safe for cyclists to sharing the road with cars going more than 30 mph and thus, for our own safety, we should have to use the provided path. This paternalistic (at best) approach is guilty of not only blaming the victim but simply doesn’t make sense unless every higher-speed roadway has a path alongside it.

The second principle at play is the idea that “we provided this path for you, you’d darned well better use it”. To which our response should be…if the path is any good, you shouldn’t have to force anyone to use it; they will use it voluntarily because it works. Our communities are replete with examples of poorly designed, built and maintained paths that are little more than glorified sidewalks. “

One blogger brings up a meaningful point. Michael Frank of Adventure Journal says, ”just code for a screaming headline, ‘Mountain Biker Takes out Iowa Mom on Grand Teton Walking Path’”.

This provision would affect 22 national parks in New York State according to the National Park Service. This includes sites from New York City, into the Appalachian Mountains and many others. Who’s to say this law won’t spill over into state parks? How will we get to food and service shops on the roads? What about road cyclists?

Are we going to let law makers force us cyclists off all US national park roads?

To remove the provision that would force cyclists off national park roads there is a petition, the League of American Bicyclists have started with over 12,500 signatures thus far. Sign the petition. The petition tells, “the Senate that the mandatory side path law is a bad idea.” If this law passes, we are supplying a deterrent against bicycling.

Join the effort to keep us on the road by signing the petition.

KEEP US ON THE ROAD!

SIGN THE LEAGUE OF AMERICAN CYCLIST’S PETITION TO REMOVE SECTION § 203 (d)

WRITE YOUR SENATOR A LETTER

The League of American Bicyclistsrepresents 57 million cyclists with 300,000 members, 25,000 individuals and 700 organizations. LAB works for better bicycling.

Winter training, cross training…Keep it fun

My off season started earlier than many of my cycling friends’ off season. While there is still a few week of cyclocross left in the season, I decided to take a break earlier than I have in the past. I’m not racing into December (last race was mid-November), but I’m still training. Part of the off season is to take a break from your sport, in my case cycling. You don’t want to get burned out by being hardcore for 12 months of the year. You take a break because you need a break. In my case I continue to train, but I’m training much different than I have all season and different than I have in the past. I’ve incorporated running into my off season training. I’ve done this for a few different seasons:

  • to take a break from cycling
  • to “train” my legs for running (helps cyclocross too)
  • I actually feel good after a run
  • planning duathlon racing in 2012

As I’ve said in a previous post, I’m starting from scratch with my running. Start off easy and gradually work my way to longer distances and to getting faster. But I also need to make sure that I don’t lose my cycling legs. I’ve done a lot of research on training plans for run, for bike and for winter training…and there is a wealth of information out there. Many of the winter training plans have a common theme to them: go easy…lower intensity…don’t get burned out…incorporate other activities (xc ski, snowshoe, run). So, in addition to winter mountain biking or exercise bike, I’m mixing in treadmill running too. I have put together a training plan that I don’t think will get stale…3 days bike, 3 days run, alternating days. It might seem stale to some people, but for me, I need a structured plan during the winter months. It’s just to easy to say, “I’ll do it tomorrow”.

By splitting my time between bike and run, I can get a little creative with my training too. I can challenge myself to my own indoor duathlon with the occasional run/bike/run session…2 mile run, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run. By using the exercise bike and treadmill, I can track both time and distance. Or, I can run an occasional 5K, each time trying for a personal best.
The bottom line is, keep things easy, stay motivated and mix up your activities. When winter is ending and spring is coming, then go out and start that hardcore training again.

9 Weeks to Running a 5k

As winter approaches, I find it harder to get motivated to ride outside. And while I do ride outside, and the trainer about 6 hours a week, I’ve decided to mix in some running too. For me, running is a bit of a chore. After one knee surgery, and a second one probably wouldn’t hurt, I haven’t been much of a runner since my college soccer days. Although I have fitness to start with, running for any length of time or distance is going to take some different focus on training. So, I’ve decided to start from scratch. I have found several training programs for a 5k run, but the articles and training programs called “Couch to 5k” is a very easy approach to getting in “running shape”. It’s basically designed for people that are just starting to get into running, and to get the slug off the couch and fit. But for a cyclist, I find it useful to get my legs trained for running too.
The particular 9 week plan that I am using is adapted for use with a treadmill (found here), but if you can run and time yourself at the same time, you can use it outdoors too. The whole plan is based on time and not distance. But when you are finished with the 9 weeks, you will be running a 5k (3.1 miles).
Variations of the “Couch To 5k” training plan can be found at http://www.c25k.com/.

Mountain Bike National Championships To Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania 2013/ 2014

Colorado Springs, Colo. (Nov. 18, 2011) — Locations for several national championship events in 2013 and 2014 are determined, USA Cycling announced Friday.

The following events will be held in these cities for the 2013 and 2014 years:
  • Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic National Championships – Madison, Wisconsin
  • Professional Criterium National Championship – High Point, North Carolina
  • Mountain Bike Cross-Country National Championships – Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania
  • Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships – Sun Valley, Idaho
“We’re excited to get ahead of these events,” Managing Director of National Events Micah Rice said. “To be able to announce some our national championship events this far in advance creates great opportunities for our partner cities as well as the riders to plan ahead.”
The USA Cycling Elite, U23, Juniors & Paralympic National Championships in Madison, Wisc., will utilize road courses that proved themselves during the 2010 and 2011 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships. Among those road courses is the Blue Mound road course, which has served as a challenge to riders during the Tour of America’s Dairyland and would have been part of the road course had Chicago’s bid to host the summer Olympic Games succeeded.
“The Greater Madison area has a rich history of hosting premiere cycling events. We are thrilled to be able to share our extraordinarily scenic, yet incredibly challenging landscape with USA Cycling athletes,” said Director of Sports Sales & Program Development for the Madison Area Sports Commission Jamie Patrick.
The triad region in North Carolina comprised of Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem has proven to be a strong spectator base for cycling events and offers a spectacular venue for criterium racing. The High Point City Criterium routinely draws large numbers of fans from the surrounding area.
“We are excited to host the USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship in High Point, N.C., as the culmination of three days of events and racing,” Chip Duckett, owner of Mock Orange Racing, “We look forward, through the resources and the energies of this city and region, to making this a National Criterium Championship to be remembered.”
The Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Lehigh Valley, Pa., received strong support from Discover Lehigh Valley Sports and allows USA Cycling the opportunity to host Mountain Bike Cross-Country National Championships in an eastern location, marking the first time this event will be held in the mid-Atlantic region. Additionally, it is located 10 miles from cycling hotbed Trexlertown, Pa. and approximately an hour away from Philadelphia.
“Bear Creek is excited to showcase our resort and challenge the best riders in the country on our demanding and technical trails.” Bear Creek Mountain Resort Events Manager Gary Klein, who will be the event’s Race Director.
On the heels of what will be two years of hosting USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross-Country National Championships, Sun Valley, Idaho has proven to be a huge hit as a destination. The vast network of trails and the atmosphere created by the Ride Sun Valley Festival, makes this area of Idaho an ideal location for an endurance event such as the USA Cycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships.
USA Cycling had previously announced that its Collegiate Road National Championships will be held in Ogden, Utah on May 4-6, 2012, and May 3-5, 2013.
Additionally, USA Cycling is excited to announce the 2013 Masters Road National Championships will return to Bend, Ore., for a third-consecutive year. After receiving an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from riders after the 2011 event, USA Cycling asked Visit Bend to make a bid to host the 2013 event.
The 2012 USA Cycling National Championship calendar has already largely been announced.

CX Season Recap

We might be smack dab in the middle of cyclocross season, but my 2011 season is finished. Bethlehem Cup, the last race of the NYCROSS.com Cyclocross Series, was most likely my last race of the season. This year I race the full NYCROSS.com series, the first time I race the whole series. This year was also probably the most challenging year too. With the challenges of areas still recovering form Hurricane Irene and an early season freak snow storm cancelling one race, as always, NYCROSS.com and all the race promoters did a great job putting on the series.
This was my third year racing ‘cross and my third year racing the NYCROSS.com series. Each year I have seen, not only growth in the sport, but significant growth in the NYCROSS.com series. This goes to show that we have a quality cyclocross series right here in our backyard. Each week I race with a great bunch of guys, and each year that group gets bigger.
Some of the races this year were also part of the ECCC Cyclocross Series for the college ranks. This, I’m sure, played a large part in the growth in the series and certainly added to the competitiveness of the races. It was great to see 60 racers in a Cat 4 race that might have only had 30 in the past.
Each week and each year I learn more and I like to think that I become more proficient in CX. And while many of my friends are still out there racing well into the winter months, I’ll be working hard preparing for an early spring start of the mountain bike season, and as always, looking forward to another great NYCROSS.com series in 2012.

Wicked Creepy ‘Cross Cancelled: Snowstorm

Race number 6 of the NYCROSS.com Cyclocross Series, the Clean Bottle Wicked Creepy ‘Cross, was cancelled due a freak snowstorm. Yeah, I know, cyclocross and snow sort of go hand in hand. The storm was actually very heavy snow, and caused a lot of damage in some areas. While I was looking forward to racing in the snow, I know that cancelling the race was the better decision.
The 7th and final race of the NYCROSS.com Series, Bethlehem Cup, is November 13, 2011. The Bethlehem Cup will be held at Elm Avenue Park in Delmar, NY with Cat 4 racing starting at 9:15.
