Sponsors added for 2010

I’ve sign on with both Fluid Recovery Drink and Brave Soldier for another year. This will bring their sponsorships through the 2010 season.
Fluid is an award winning muscle recovery sports drink. Its unique blend of carbohydrates, protein, and glutamine provide an outstanding and all natural formula for muscle repair, regeneration, and recovery.
Fluid was originally created as part of a senior project at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo. In its first year on the market, Fluid was awarded “Best Nutrition Product of the Year” and “Best Sports/Recovery Drink of 2008”.
Brave Soldier began with a simple idea : The need for a product that would speed the healing and jagged scarring of road rash. Road rash. It’s as ugly as it sounds. A bad crash, a hard slide, a nasty fall. Stripped of a layer of skin, the flesh is left red, raw and painful. For most athletes, skin abrasions like road rash comes with the territory. It’s the price paid for adventure or for victory.
They began to bring the concept of athletic skin care to sports competitions across California, Arizona and Nevada. Along the way, they met mountain bikers, climbers, adventure racers, marathon runners, and many not-so-extreme sports enthusiasts. They listened to the stories. They learned and began to grow. Slowly, new products began to evolve, one at a time. Just like their Antiseptic Healing Ointment, these new products were born out of necessity.

Kenda Happy Medium Tire

With 2009 winding down, 2010 will be here before you know it. Like me, I’m sure many are looking forward to getting that new gear for the 2010 season. The one item than I am drualing for is the new Kenda Eric Carter Happy Medium tire. This tire look to be the best of both worlds. It incorporates a semi-slick center with small pyramid shaped knobs which are enough for that loose top layer. The outside knobs are spaced far enough apart so they are not touching the ground while riding straight. They will, however, bite while cornering to hold that line.
Here is how Kenda describes this tire in their 2010 catalog:
  • Two tires in one – fast rolling/accelerating center tread paired with an aggressive outside edge for cornering assurance.
  • Knob heights and profiles are designed for seamless transition from the tire’s center to the edge knobs.
  • A universal design that is applicable to all types of riding and racing.
  • Downhill (DH) version features 2-ply construction and Sick-E compound for extreme use. Cross country versions feature light-weight single-ply casing and DTC compound for performance.
Unfortunately, this tire won’t be available until the spring of 2010. But, when it is available, there will be a pair of Happy Mediums on my Titus.

Bethlehem Cup, NYCROSS.com Final Race

The final round of the NYCROSS.com Cyclocross Series, the Bethlehem Cup, is in the books. And, for me at least, the 2009 cyclocross season in finished.
After rain all day Saturday and through the night, the Bethlehem Cup course at Elm Avenue Town Park in Delmar, NY, could have easily been a tougher course than it was. While the water soaked grassy areas slowed you down, the gravel sections drained off nicely and ended up being pretty fast. As the course was winding through the park, the Cat 4 did bypass the long steep run-up into the woods. I was pleased to see that we didn’t have to run that one. The other run-up in the course was a short steep grassy…errr muddy…hill. Toe cleats on my shoes would have been nice. The Cat 4 races in this series are only 30 minutes long, but it’s 30 minutes of all out with no real recovery time. So, finishing on the same lap is always a goal for me. This is a race that I again finished on the lead lap and with a 15th place finish.
I wasn’t sure at the beginning of the season how I would like CX racing. I can say now, actually after my first CX race, that it is a blast. I ‘ll be back at the NYCROSS.com series again in 2010.

Wildcat Epic 100 Course Update

Preliminary course maps are now available for the inaugural Wildcat Epic 100. The base camp will be at a yet to be determined area in New Paltz, NY. Both days of racing will start from the base camp. The following is the latest email sent out from Genisis Adventures:
Hi All,
We have posted preliminary maps for the Wildcat along with profiles on “The Course” menu of www.wildcatepic.com. These courses will be modified as we go through the permitting process, but you can get a pretty good feel for the design. As noted on the website; many of these areas are not open to the public for riding, please respect all landowners and stay out of private areas.
Remember, registration fees start to go up on January 1st, so register now to lock in the best price.

The Abandoned Bicycles of New York

While I was surfing the web this morning and browsing bicycle related websites, I came across the blog of New York photographer Joe Shumachers. According to his blog, Joe lives in Harlem, and like to walk around and take pictures of what he sees. He will be your friend if you feed him ice cream. He has put together a very cool, and ever growing, photo album with a collection of photos of The Abandoned Bikes of New York.
