During the summer, I found myself in the need for a new wheelset for my Jamis Ventura Elite road bike. The factory wheels that were on the bike had several thousand mile on them since 2006. They held up solid until one day when I hit a pothole in the road. Fortunately I didn’t flat, but I did get a pretty good gouge in the sidewall of the rear rim. So it was time to replace the wheels.

Vuelta ZeroLite Comp Wheelset

I consider myself a master at finding closeouts and leftovers. The latest and greatest is mostly not important to me. I absolutely love a deal. And at Bikeisland.com, there are deals.

This time around it was for a wheelset. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, but I wanted a good wheelset. I have used Vuelta wheels in the past on my 26″ mountain bike, and I like them. So this time around, I was looking at the Vuelta USA road wheels. $110.00 for the 2011 Vuelta ZeroLite Comp wheels? Hmm, that looked like it was for me. After comparing the Comp set to the Pro set, I decided on the ZeroLite Comp wheels.

The hand built ZeroLite Comp wheels were true right out of the box. I even put them on the truing stand to check them out. They were true. And after 500+ miles, they are still true. The front wheel is 24 spoke 2 cross while the rear is also a 24 spoke 2 cross build. The spokes are 3mm bladed spokes and the rims are 30mm medium deep dish pinned rims with a CNC machined braking surface. The sealed ball bearing hubs are smooth. But, as with any ball bearing hub, you should clean and grease each season.

While this isn’t a high end wheelset, it is still a high quality wheelset. For $39.00 more I could have gotten the ZeroLite Pro wheels with cartridge bearing hubs. But for me and the use that I will give them, it wasn’t necessary. The Vuelta ZeroLite Comp wheels are everything that I could ask of a wheelset.
